As a clinical counselor at the Center, Susan provided short-term, solution-focused
psychotherapy to active duty and retired US Navy, Marine Corp, Army, and Coast
Guard service members and their families. Susan was a critical member of the
Family Advocacy team to address allegations of child abuse and intimate partner
violence. She was a primary counselor for victims of military sexual assault and
worked closely with service members exhibiting suicide-related behaviors.
Prior to her service with the military, Susan spent five years as a Pediatric Social
Worker at Children’s Mercy Hospital & Clinics in Kansas City, MO providing
leadership, education, and clinical services to the hospital and clinics. Oversight of
the 24/7 on-call social work teams serving the Emergency Department and Urgent
Care Centers gives her a unique perspective in working with families affected by
child abuse and domestic violence.
Susan also worked eight years with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) providing
educational programming, case management, crisis intervention and bereavement
counseling to dialysis patients and families; individuals receiving an organ
transplant; and to individuals and families who donated organs to save or improve
the quality of life for a transplant recipient. Susan was a member of the NKF’s
Ethics Committee and served as the manager multiple times for Team MO-KAN at
the National Kidney Foundation’s U.S. Transplant Games, an Olympic-style sporting
event showcasing the success of transplantation and organ donation.
Susan is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in South Carolina. She
received a BA in Psychology from Avila University and a Master of Social Work from
In October 2018, Susan and her husband Phil, along with their dog Betsy Grace,
